Science Event: "24 heures de science"
On May 6 and 7 at the Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve, 125 years of AAFC research were on display! A science outreach activity called "24 heures de science" gave us the opportunity to highlight the science developed at two of AAFC's research centres in Quebec. The Food Research and Development Centre gave a presentation on chemical diversity in food. The Horticulture Research and Development Centre gave a presentation on beneficial nematodes in the soil, and extracted the aroma of Canada wild ginger. In all, seven partners, including the Canadian Space Agency, took part in the event.
Here are some of the highlights of the event:

Who better than the research scientists at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to showcase wild ginger, an undergrowth plant whose roots are used to make a type of purple chewing gum?

The chemical diversity of foods and its effect on human health can be a riveting topic for youth when explained enthusiastically by an expert!

A young boy and his grandmother are awestruck by the nematodes being shown to them by a research scientist.

How fascinating it is to talk about the innovations developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centres over the last 125 years!
