Canadian Nursery Crop Profile: Container Production - March 2003 (75 pp) - Synopsis
Container production of nursery crops in Canada has grown steadily since first introduced in the early 1950's. Types of plants typically sold in containers by Canadian nurseries include; perennials including ornamental grasses, deciduous shrubs, broadleaf evergreen shrubs, narrow leafed evergreens, caliper trees, roses and vines.
The Canadian Nursery Crop Profile: Container Production provides an overview of the nursery industry in Canada and production and pest management practices for container-grown crops. Information is provided on nursery plant propagation, growing media and irrigation and fertilization practices. The biology of key disease, insect and mite, weed and animal problems and information on cultural, chemical and biological methods of control, is provided. Pesticide use data and data on industry imports, exports and farm gate receipts for 2001 - 02, is presented. The profile discusses pest management challenges and issues for diseases, insects and mites and weeds.
Provincial ornamentals and nursery extension specialists are listed at the end of the profile. Links are also provided to national and provincial grower organizations and provincial ministry of agriculture websites, sources of additional information on container ornamentals production.
