The Sustainable Agriculture Environmental Systems (SAGES) initiative provided science-based research and development projects in water and climate change. The program created new and improved agricultural practices, offered policy options and increased understanding and adaptation to water and climate impacts.
Farmers benefited from the development and availability of new and improved agricultural practices that address environmental challenges such as climate variability and crop, livestock, and water management in an economically sustainable manner.
The Sustainable Agriculture Environmental Systems (SAGES) initiative aimed to provide science-based responses to two high-level priorities: water and climate change. SAGES supported 25 peer-reviewed research and development projects and provided direct benefit to producers through knowledge and development. SAGES was designed to accelerate the creation of beneficial management practices (BMPs), offer policy options and a better understanding of impacts and adaptation opportunities.
Target was a research and development initiative which focused on understanding the mechanisms by which agricultural practices, water and climate variability interact with each other, and aimed to identify new or improved practices that could be used by producers to maximize the positive impact of agriculture on the environment. The focus was on using knowledge of the effects of existing practices to develop new or improved BMPs.
Synergy was a research and development initiative that addressed water and climate variability in a broader context. Synergy utilized partners' expertise to complement AAFC internal expertise to address the issues at stake. The focus was similar to SAGES Target but capitalized on external resources and emerging technologies to understand the linkages between agriculture and the broader ecosystem. Issues such as how climate variability will influence land use and understanding, assessing and managing agriculture's impact on water quality were studied.
