Background

At their annual meeting in July 2008, federal, provincial and territorial Ministers announced the completion of the Growing Forward framework, which replaced the Agricultural Policy Framework.

After holding consultations with over 3,000 stakeholders, farmers and Canadians, we defined the Growing Forward objectives:

  • Focusing on building a competitive and innovative sector
  • Ensuring the sector contributes to society's priorities
  • Being proactive in managing risks

We worked closely as governments, and together with stakeholders, to develop the programs that will best meet the needs of the sector.

Governments are investing $1.3 billion over five years, cost-shared on a 60:40 basis between federal and provincial and territorial governments. With this funding and the partnership between federal, provincial and territorial governments, we are well-positioned to provide the agriculture industry with the tools and assistance they need to improve their profitability and competitiveness.
