Water Wells
A groundwater well is the most common method of accessing groundwater. A well is an artificial excavation or structure put down by digging, driving, boring or drilling into the earth. Once a well has been installed, there is a need to maintain and monitor the performance of the well.
Water Wells That Last for Generations
Water Wells That Last for Generations is a workbook designed to assist the rural population in the development, operation and maintenance of groundwater supplies.
Sustainable Water Well Initiative
The Sustainable Water Well initiative (SWWI) is a project which focuses on promoting safe and reliable rural water well supplies. Extending the life of existing water wells through prevention and rehabilitation measures can be less costly than developing new water supplies. SWWI promotes and tests methods to address well yields and water quality and extend the well's lifespan.
Water Wells and Surface Water Flooding
Wells are susceptible to contamination when flooding occurs. Improperly designed water wells, and in particular wells in pits, are particularly prone to contamination when surface water enters the well casing. Sediment and harmful bacteria can compromise a wells performance and the quality of water in the aquifer when this happens.
