Areas of Expertise:

  • Develop crop, soil and fertilizer management technologies that conserve or enhance soil organic matter, recycle and utilize nutrients within soil-plant systems effectively and efficiently, maintain optimum economic sustainable crop productivity and minimize damage to the environment. This can be done through efficient nutrient cycling and management by using strategies to maximize nutrient use efficiency and economic benefits (by meeting the nutrient requirements of crops but not greatly exceeding at any stage of growth), while minimizing nutrient loss from the soil-plant system to the environment.

Current Projects:

  • Develop proper S fertilizer management practices to optimize seed yield and quality of Brassica oilseed crops.
  • Investigating the relative effectiveness of various Cu sources, formulations, methods, times and rates of application on yield and quality of wheat grain.
  • Influence of balanced fertilization on forage yield and soil quality on grassland, forage yield, seed yield longevity of alfalfa.
  • Investigating the effect of input level, cropping diversity and crop species on crop yield, nutrient uptake, accumulation and distribution of nitrate-N and extractable P in soil profile, soil properties and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Influence of tillage, crop residue management and land use on nutrient cycling, crop production, fertilizer N requirements for optimum yield, C and N sequestration in soil, soil structure and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Determining reasons for lower protein content in wheat under zero-till (ZT) vs. conventional-tillage (CT) by using the 15N-labelling technique.
  • Monitoring the long-term effects of repeated swine manure applications on crop production, soil and environmental quality in northeastern Saskatchewan.
  • Influence of termination time and method of alfalfa stands on nutrient cycling, crop yield and N uptake of succeeding annual crops, soil properties and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Increasing availability of P from rock phosphate fertilizer with Penicillium bilaii.
  • Develop novel techniques/management practices and products to improve nutrient use efficiency, reduce nutrient losses and decease toxic substance accumulation in the environment within various and varying production systems.
  • Evaluation of anaerobically digested swine manure (ADSM) and CGN-Rich fertilizer product as sources of nutrients for crop yield, soil quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Develop novel techniques and products to improve nutrient use efficiency, reduce nutrient losses and decease toxic substance accumulation in the environment.
  • Improving forage production and longevity of alfalfa stands with balanced fertilization
  • Assessment of the impact of management systems on soil nutrient cycling processes.
