Areas of Expertise:
- food economist sustainable production system
- Application of hedonic models to value product quality characteristics in the British Columbia horticultural market;
- quantifying the effects of plant breeders' rights, cultivar diversity and genetic improvements on the yield of canola, wheat, and potatoes;
- identifying supply and demand constraints in the development of manufacturing hort-products such as fresh-cut fruit and vegetables;
- evaluating the economic potential to produce new crops and exploit their value-added opportunities;
- developing ammonia emission intensities (e.g., NH3 emissions/ ton of meat and protein produced) for different
- livestock species and identifying livestock/manure management practices to mitigate emissions;
- assesssing the contribution of private R&D investment and human capital on food processing productivity;
Current Projects:
- Quantifying the contribution of plant breeders' rights, cultivar diversity and genetic improvements on wheat yields.
- Developing ammonia emission intensities for different species of livestock and identifying mitigating manure management practices that are economical and easy to adopt.
- Identifying the contribution of plant variety protection, varietal realease/commercialization strategies and environmental conditions on potato yields and quality.
- Reviewing trends in the Canadian fresh-cut industry and examining the economics of adopting traceability systems to improve product quality and safety
