Current Projects:

  • Assessment and management of biological and chemical contaminants carried in livestock and poultry manure. [GAPS]
  • Develop indicators to assess soil suitability to receive organic residues, based on soil nutrient characteristics, agronomic needs, and soil biological, chemical and physical quality.
  • Develop new and improved handling and application practices and technologies to enhance nutrient use efficiency and reduce the environmental and health risks from organic residues.
  • Develop new treatment technologies for organic wastes to enhance their economic value, conserve nitrogen and reduce phosphorus content, and minimize the environmental and health risks of the product.
  • Improved understanding of the forms and fates of phosphorus in composts and development of compost BMPs for horticultural crops [GAPS]
  • Increase understanding of the fundamental processes determining the on-farm fate of pathogens, organic contaminants, and nutrients.
  • National Water Quality Surveillance Program
  • Science-based use of municipal Biosolids for the protection of water quality
  • Understanding and managing preferential flow of liquid manure and biosolids to adjacent water [GAPS]
